  • bayonet opinions wanted

While looking for an original enfield bayonet, I found this on e-bay and wanted to see if I could get any opinions. The price seems awfully low.

Received. “How now about the fifth and sixth guns?”
Sent. “The sixth gun is the bully boy.”
Received. “Can you give it any directions to make it more bully?”
Sent. “Last shot was little to the right.”
Received. “Fearfully hot here. Several men sunstruck. Bullets whiz like fun. Have ceased firing for awhile, the guns are so hot."

Enfield bayonet stampings varied. I think the price is "so low" since there are still over five days till the end of the auction...

I believe it is a Nepalese or Indian Enfield bayonet. They are pretty common these days. I wouldnt buy it with out a micrometer reading of the inside diameter of the socket, as it could be for a Martini Henry.

I can't quite tell whether the letter under the crown is a B for Birmingham or an R. Under magnification, it looks like an R. Rajapoor maybe? Skennerton doesn't list that inspection mark in The Broad Arrow I'd be inclined to agree with Mr. Johnson. The X is the bend test mark, which was used in both England and India. It would be interesting to see if there is a regimental mark or rack number on the socket.

Why's it so cheap? Badly rusted, no locking ring, no scabbard. If it goes above $25, somebody's getting fleeced.

            good points -- thanks

I sent an email asking about the socket measurement. no response yet.

I was thinking if it goes cheap, I might be able to get the rust off as long as it isnt badly pitted.

If you buy it, shoot me an email at p58enfield@rica.net, and I can put you in touch with a guy who has original locking rings.
