  • Group Memberships: You decide

The new forum software allows us to be members of more then one group at a time. For instance, the majority of you are right now members of Rank & File. However, you're also members of your various messes and we have the ability to allow you to join Public User Groups.

Currently the Public User Groups that I have built are:
    -Army of the Pacific
    -Columbia Rifles
    -G.H. Thomas' Invincibles
    -Rowdy Pards
    -Southern Guard
    -Western Independent Greys

We can appoint a group leader to each of these groups and they get to decide who can join and who can't.

I'm not fully versed on all the benefits of being part of those user groups, but its something I'm interested in experimenting with. If you decide to make your unit your primary membership, it would show up in your userdata and replace "Rank & File". As a member of the GHTI, I'll probably keep it secondary so as to display my title as administrator.

I'm quite sure we can generate custom mailing lists, private forum folders and such all based upon these user groups.

To join one of those groups, go to your User CP > Control Panel and scroll down until you see Miscellaneous > Group Membership ... see if you can figure it out.

I will likely add more groups later, but to be real honest, I'd prefer not to do it for every 3 man mess on planet earth. I'd prefer to keep it company sized and greater simply because it'll take less time on my part. Let me know what you think of it.

    Re: Group Memberships: You decide

    Paul,

When you talk about keeping the groups to company size or bigger, do you mean in group membership or in number of members on the forum?

The SWB certainly qualifies as a company or bigger sized organization, but only a handful of us use this forum, unfortunately.

    Thanks

Good question. I'm not sure yet Dusty. I'd say lets roll with what we have so far... try to get a feel for it and we can add more groups like the SWB later if the membership of that organization are active on the forums and calling for it.

        Brilliant

Paul it strikes me that this will be a great boon to event preparation for not only the units already identified, but for events bringing a myriad of folks together like Mansfield. I want to start a group for Co B and have it link to an overall 15th TX group as we prepare. It allows us to pass information and interact all in one place without having to set up a yahoo group or what have you or a giant e-mail tree. When the event is over, preservation money is counted and AAR published, the group can go away if need be.

        Make sense?
