  • Forum displaying correctly?

I checked the forum from my wife's computer and I didn't care for the way it was displaying. I'm curious if any of you are having the same issue as her computer is.

The first image (vbulletin1b.gif) is a screenshot taken from her computer. The column widths are all out of whack.

The second image is (vbulletin2b.gif) a screenshot taken from my computer. The column widhts are as they should be.

Are any of you experiencing whacky column widths like in the first image?

    Paul,

Mine looks like your wife's computer. It isn't that wacky. It was always like that since we moved over here... I've kind of got used to it already.

Ok, thanks for letting me know. I'd prefer it to display correctly on all computers. Otherwise, that eats up a lot of screen space. I'm going to look into it and see if its something I can correct.

I have to enlarge my screen so I don't have to slide the bar at the bottom back and forth.

Ok, I upgraded her computer to Internet Explorer 6.0 and that fixed the issue. I suggest if you wish to improve your view space here on the forum to likewise get the latest Windows service pack from the microsoft site and upgrade.

              Paul:

You've figured out the conundrum of web site design - depending on the operating system (Windows and all the versions; Mac and the various OS's) AND the browser, you may get different screen views, or the colors may look different, or the fonts can be funky or the text is out of place or... And, as you discovered, various versions of the same browser give sometimes different results.

We do a lot of web work in my company and my designer designs on a PC using Internet Explorer, we check it on a PC running Netscape and a Mac running both IE and Netscape. Sometimes we get real funky results. Sometimes its the PC/Mac thing, sometimes its the browsers and sometimes its the hamster turning the wheel inside the CPU.

It'll drive you crazy at times...

Read the fine print in the progarm you are using and it will usually state "optimized for (browser) version XXX." A good rule of thumb is the lower the version of browser, the more compatible the site is to more people - ie. the situation with your wife's computer running an older version of Explorer. Our rule of thumb is: Design for the masses.

When you use an off the shelf program such as V Bulletin, you might want to state "Site works best with Internet Explorer v 6.0" or whatever and offer a link to the upgrade site.

The new format is appearing 100% properly on AOL via Windows XP. (Given AOL's propensity to bobble the ball, that's quite an accomplishment!)

Great work. Thank you for contributing so much to the community.

Mine are like yours. I'm running IE 6.0 on Windows XP.
