  • Original Sword Knot

    Greetings,

I've recently received a sword knot from a relative's estate that I was told was an original Civil War era sword knot. This particular relative had an extensive collection of militaria from several periods, so I'm not sure how reliable the date is on this particular item. This sword knot is made of gold bullion and black cotton/linen thread woven together.

If anyone can help me out with some information about this knot I would appreciate it. So far all of my research has come up with pictures and descriptions of the more traditional sword knots, but nothing resembling this knot. Below are two pictures.

    Thanks in advance.

    Re: Original Sword Knot

    Sir,

I could be wrong but I've seen such knots on Imperial German swords from around the WWI era. Either way, I do not think it is CW period. Maybe look up The Discriminating General's website and see if you can't find a match.

      Re: Original Sword Knot

      Jared,
I'm far from an authority on Sword Knots. However, I own a repro P1845 British Infantry Officer's Sword, many of which were imported and used by CS and US Officers, The Sword Knot you have does share some similarities with the Knot I have on my Sword, which was copied off an original dating from the early 1850's. It's entirely possible this is a British or Canadian Knot. You may want to pursue that route.
