  • Foot Artillery Sword Markings

My boss brought a sword to work to see if anyone could identify it.Turned out to be a Foot Artillery Sword dated 1844.One thing I noticed that got my attention was the markings on the crossguard. The initials "W.A.T" were stamped into the crossguard. The letters are roughly 1/4 inches high.On the opposite side of the crossguard is the number 27, which are the same size as the lettering.Which leads me to ask the question; are these unit markings?or would the initials be inspectors marks?
