  • Is it just me?

I know this is trivial and it's probably the filmmaker in me as much as the re-enactor but, is it possible that there are only two sound tracks in existance for Civil War themed films. I just saw a clip for Cold Mountain and the music is from Glory. Gangs of NY used the sound track from Gettysburg. What's the matter with these people. My last film had a budget equal to the cartering budget for Cold Mountain but I managed to have an entire original soundtrack produced for less than $1000. You would think with a little effort a big budget film could manage to dig up a composer somewhere. Sorry for the rant. Now I feel better.
As always, this is just my two cents.

Well, actually, they did pick up a bit of "new music"--recording the various Sacred Harp tunes, in the area that is "up home" for me-the Liberty Baptist Church, high atop the fertile and somewhat isolated plateau known as Sand Mountain in northeast Alabama.

Don't know how much they used the music though--my computer is not smart enough to play the various clips folks have sent.

Charlie, I think you're on to something here.

How many times have you heard the themes from Glory (the one sung by that Harlem Boys Choir) in movie trailers, commercials, bumper music, etc., etc.?

And WHY did we have to ruin the opening battle-scene in Gladiator by resurrecting the Zulu Engonyama chant... ripped from the soundtrack of the 1964 film Zulu?

I guess it's hard to keep good audio in its box.

        Robert,
I totally forgot about the Zulu chant. That could be because I watch it like once a month so it's permanantly in my head anyway. Not to mention they use that Harlem Boys Choir theme on the Iron Chef. They use parts of that and parts of the overture from "Backdraft". So now when I watch Backdraft as the credits roll on the movie I can visualize the Iron Chef credits (or vice versa).

I might also toss in Philip Glass' Adagio for Strings (Platoon) pops as the "music in your head" for us to enjoy while watching gory slow-mo cinematic violence fairly often. Yes, sound/music editing in film is almost Pavlovian. Problem is who has been conditioned more, the viewer or editor?

Unfortunately there just aren't enough movies featuring Yello's "Oh Yeah." Any child of the 80s probably catches himself singing that once a week.

Oh Yeah... Oh Yeah... Oh Yeah
            The moon... beautiful
            The sun... even more beautiful
Oh Yeah... Oh Yeah... Oh Yeah

            Beautiful
            Oh Yeah... Oh Yeah...

            Good time
But who can forget the sounds... DOO-ooo bow BOW, shk, SHKA-shkaa

Now that would have been a great soundtrack for GAG. At least we could have watched that movie with shades on and felt cool with Yello's music blaring in the background.

Nevermind me, I was up too late last night.

When the marketing wiz's in NYC conjure up a plan for marketing a movie they alsways borrow "clips" from memorable themes of the past. The lifted clip does not usually make it to the finished soundtrack album or movie though, just marketing.
It's everywhere, liscensing great old rock songs to sell everything from Pam spray to Chevrolet has been going on forever. "Walking on Sunshine" that one hit wonder of the 80's, has made far more for the writers and performers of the song through commercial liscensing then the song ever did.

                Re: Is it just me?

Many times the trailer and TV promos are prepared months in advance of the final cut of the movie and before the official score for the soundtrack is out of the final stages of production. This is when they use "stock" music that has already been liscensed and is the property of the studio or whoever.

By the way, "Adagio for Strings" is a 20th century composition by Samuel Barber and Phillip Glass was the conductor on several (not necessarily the better) of the recordings. I agree that it is over used but it is still one of my favorites. My favorite performance is by the Atlanta Symphony on the Telarc Digital label.

There is no spell checker now. That feature is no longer supported.

Pardon me for the Glass/Barber slip up. And yes, the Adagio is very fine music, I did not mean to suggest otherwise.
