I've searching but haven't found any books specifically dealing with the Army of the Tennessee. Does anyone know if there are any published works dealing with the organization and campaigns of the ARMY OF THE TENNESSEE?

Larry Daniel just came out with such a book on the Army of the Cumberland, hopefully a similar work on the Army of the Tennessee is in the works somewhere.

You are going to have to wait a little while, Steve Woodworth is working on one right now, actually I have heard its getting close to publication, but thats the only thing that I am aware of.

Confederate armies tended to be named for states, though not always. Federal armies tended to be named for either rivers or military districts, depending on how you look at it. Again, not always (Pope's short-lived Army of Virginia). Therefore, the extra "the" in the name.Bernard Biederman

While not exactly what you are looking for Three Years with the Army of the Cumberland, The Letters and Diary of Major James A. Connolly is a good read. Edited by Paul A. Angle, published by Indiana University Press. My copy is dated 1969, not sure if it is still available or not. An interlibrary loan may be the way to go if it is out of print.Jim KindredComment

For starters, there's Ed Bearss' three-volume campaign history, THE VICKSBURG CAMPAIGN done around the late 1960s when he was working at the national park there.
My personal favorite is Warren Grabau's NINETY-EIGHT DAYS: A GEOGRAPHER's VIEW OF THE VICKSBURG CAMPAIGN, which covers in great detail from Grant's decision to cross the river below the town to the surrender.
James Arnold's GRANT WINS THE WAR: DECISION AT VICKSBURG is another good overview of about 350 pages or so.Tom EzellComment
