original Welligton boots

Dear comrades,
I have just recently purchsed an old pair of Wllington boots of which I am quite certain they are original although in an unused condition.
The are a little hight than regulation but were obviously meant for bein worn under the trouser leg.
They are pegged and wear the maker mark " D.T.&Co. Manufacturers Honesdale Pa"
Unfortunately i am not yet an expert of 19th century footwear but I hope that there is somebody on the forum who can tell me more about these boots: when they were made, about the firm that had made them.

Since all boots were not a specified item and were purchased on the open market by the Q.M. there would have been no specified height. They were purchased and issued on an as needed basis to arty and cav units but most wore brogans. As to the actual name of the maker it may be difficult to find out as most of the names on footwear were of retailers and middle men. There were numerous makers in the Pilly area so start with city directories. Do not be suprised if it was a shoe or dry goods store. Work your way west towards Hanover. If by Wellington you mean a one piece front it would have been the most popular boot style in the U.S. from the 1820's thru the 1880's. If they are still unused check inside to see if the pegs are still sticking up almost every unused pair I have seen still have the pegs up which may be why they were unused.. You may see a vertical row of stitching on the heel counter which may be off center. Heel counters were often built up of multiple layers of thin upper leather and the row of stitches is to hold them in place. These dissapear after the late 1860's when companys began to specialize in production of component parts such as counters, insoles, sock liners, out soles and half soles etc..

Dear Tom,
the pegs indeed can be felt on the inside of the boot. There are also brass brads as reinforcement beside the pegging in the instep.
the counters are on the outside and the whole boot is two piece construction ( one front piece)
I wish i could post the pics I have but I don't know how to do it!
The pull loops are stitched by mashine with a chain stitch.
Any info is most appreciated!

You will probably find that the side seams are also sewn on a chain stitch machine. One of the first uses of sewing machines in the shoe trades was for this purpose. This would most likely place your boots post 1850.

3. Use the "Upload file" and BROWSE to find the picture you saved in No. 1

5. See what happens

AAAAAAAAHHHH. IT has worked. I was just not patient enough!
Here is a picture of the manufacturer's stamp.
I hope somebody can tell me more about the boots!
