  • Looking for Veterans of CW Centennial

    Everyone,

I am interested in locating individuals who participated in the Civil War Centennial (1961-1965) either as participants in living history events or as promoters/organizers of events. I am interested in interviewing folks that participated in these events for an oral history project focusing on public memory and commemoration of the Civil War.

Alot of you know me but many do not, so I should introduce myself for those that do not. I am currently in my second year of the graduate program in Heritage Preservation at Georgia State University in Atlanta. I am pursuing this project for my oral history class - believe me, it's tough to find a Civil War related topic when you need to interview living informants. I have always been interested in the early days of living history, so I thought this would be a great opportunity to meet with pinoneers of that movement. Personally, I have been involved with living history since 1984 (both rev war and civil war) and remember speaking with older guys about these early days when I was a kid. Also, as I am sure many would appreciate, the Centennial Memoires of Ross Kimmel posted sometime ago on this site certainly kindled an interest in collecting more stories of this time period.

If you are a living historian who participated in events between the years 1961 and 1965 I would love to speak with you. Further, if you live in the Atlanta area, or are going to be at Prelude to Chickamauga - it would be great to interview you (before or after the event, of course). Please email me if interested at jademonkey74@yahoo.com

    Thanks,

    Garrett Silliman

    Garret,

I'm game, and I did participate, with pictures to prove it (my dress was pretty good by accident, not by design, but my escort was a farb :D )

My memories are rather small and distinctly colored by the fact that I was 6 years old at the time. And the commemoration was a small-town one, not one of the big battle things.

I was eight and a half years old in April, 1961. Didn't know much about "reenacting" - we just played "Civil War".

I had a "Reb Hat" (that's what the store clerk wrote on the sales slip), a pair of grey jeans, a grey shirt, and a Kadet cap-firing musket with rubber bayonet.

The "battlefield" was a housing development which was under construction - lots of great places to launch an ambush from.

My family and I visited Shiloh waaaaay back in 1961. I remember sporting a felt union kepi, but I think that was the extent of my uniform. For some reason I can also remember seeing boxes of dug-up minie balls for sale in the park, and climbing on cannons.

I've sent you information off-line for a someone who was involved in the centennial. He was also present at the 75th anniversary at Gettysburg. I've seen a photo of him in the background with CW vets shaking hands in the foreground.

He's a retired Marine, and he recently quit the hobby as his years are finally catching up to him.

I've spoken to him many times. He has many stories of the Centennial. This guy is your gold mine.

You probably already have this series of articles, but it is a great place to start. Several of the individuals still live in the MD/VA/PA area, and occasionally attend NSSA shoots.

A great place for you to harvest this kind of oral history would be at the N-SSA Nationals, held the first full weekend of October (this year it'll be October 4-8) just west of Winchester, VA. I know several people who were active in the Civil War centennial who will be there.

My father, BG (R) Glenn Beasley portrayed QC Lamar during the reenactment of succession of the State of Mississippi in the early 1960s. I can remember his period clothing. he would be glad to speak to you regarding this
