    This might be of interest...

A Florida woman has been awarded $11.3 million in a defamation lawsuit against a Louisiana woman who posted messages on the Internet accusing her of being a "crook," a "con artist" and a "fraud."

Legal analysts say the Sept. 19 award by a jury in Broward County, Fla. — first reported Friday by the Daily Business Review — represents the largest such judgment over postings on an Internet blog or message board. Lyrissa Lidsky, a University of Florida law professor who specializes in free-speech issues, calls the award "astonishing."

        Here's how:

Maybe someone who's considering ripping a vendor publicly in one of the fora will think about it first, before someone decides to sue them, the forum itself, or both.

        Or maybe not.

Oh you mean the ongoing critique by one certain authentic vendor of another's vendor's wares? I read what I believe you are talking about and didn't see anything that I thought quite rose to the level cited in your link (not that it hasn't happened in the past).

Not likely to happen, IMHO, but I see what you mean.

            Re: Beware

Vendor vs. vendor or buyer vs. vendor squabbles - it all fits. Perhaps you are right (I would hope so), but it's really just a matter of degree.

The bottom line is that there's now a legal precedent for this sort of thing, and some vendor who's having a bad day might now decide to call their lawyer. You never know these days.

It may be a long shot, but I'd hate to see this, or any other, forum go down because of it.

I personally know a guy (not in this forum or even related to the WBTS) who bashed a company in a forum and the company found out who he was (much like this forum you were required to have your name and home town on it) and they called him on the phone to confront the issue. Some companies out there are picky about this stuff....I can see under the right circumstances that a lawsuit could be something to consider.

In case your wondering what the company said to the guy....they sturnly suggested that he contact them with any complaints or issued before he flames them in a forum.

Not a WBTS related topic here....but very interesting none the less
