  • Unlikely but economical source for CW books

If you have an Ollie's Bargain Outlet in your area, you might want to keep an eye on their book section. Ollie's is a closeout chain and may have any publisher's stuff at any given time. The military history section is about 4x8 feet of wall space and what they have is unpredictable--one time it'll be almost entirely Vietnam, another time WWII, etc.--but there is always at least one CW title. I've seen everything from New York regimental histories (sorry, I had nothing to record title and author) to Time-Life publications, to very specific works.

I like the one I got most recently: The Illustrated Directory of Uniforms, Weapons and Equipment of the Civil War, ed. by David Miller, Salamander Books Greenwich Editions, 2001. It set me back a whole $4.99. It would be old news to many of you who are able to travel extensively and examine museum pieces, but I refer to it often.

As I said, what Ollie's has is utterly unpredictable, but it's worth a look if you're driving by one of their stores.
