  • Looking for an ancestor

I hope this is the proper place to put this thread..if not please move it to the correct place.

We are working on my husbands family tree and getting back to the 1800's. Where would we look to find if our ancestors fought in the war?
Jobe M. MILLER was born in Lovettsville, Loudoun County, Virginia and
Townsend MILLER was born in Loudoun County, Virginia

If you could point me in the right dirrection I would much appreciate it.

    Re: Looking for an ancestor

There are alot of sources to search for information like that. You can begin online with Broadfoot Publishing. They have a name search- once you have found the name of your ancestor, which will list his unit information, you can look to see if there is a Regimental History published for that unit. Through Broadfoot or through the National Archives you can get photocopies of all documents that pertain to your particular soldier during the war- enlistment papers, medical, roll call, oath of allegiance after Appomatox, etc.

There is also Ancestry.com and the genealogical resources of the Mormon Church. Ancestry has some services for free, but usually to find anything in detail you will have to become a subscriber. The website for the LDS is not as helpful, but if you live anywhere near a library, the libraries are great-The same holds true for the National Archives- if you can go to a local site for research it is much better than using the internet.

Hope this helps and good luck with the search.

You can look up your relatives names at http://www.itd.nps.gov/cwss/soldiers.cfm , both Townsend Miller and Jobe Miller appear as Federal soldiers and any number T. Miller and J. Miller are listed as Confederate soldiers.
