  • "Would never happen here"

I just finished reading "True Tales of Civil War in Missouri", by Carolyn M Bartels. Not only has it given me a different persepective of the ACW here in Missouri but also on some of the chaos now going on in various parts of the world. Killings and revenge killings are on the front page in our daily news these days. It is easy for us to sit in our safe neighborhoods and communities and think that it, "Would never happen here". I found it a little disturbing that rounding up the men from a house hold, taking them to the woods, and shooting them just because they were Sech or Fed minded back then is just a bit too close for comfort to todays reality in places like Iraq.

Let's hope through our efforts of brining a better understanding of the ACW to our communities we help make sure it, "Never happens here AGAIN".

    Kevin,

It happened pretty much everywhere, but there were also some pretty vicious attrocities in North Carolina during the war. And yeah, it's happened all through history.

Look at the accounts from the Gettysburg reunions. There are many documented cases of "revenge" type "crimes" being committed in both camps. I believe that individuals even targeted specific folks in these "attacks". The amount of violence tapered off as to the later reunions, probably due more to age of the participants as opposed to their willing forgiveness.
