  • a sad day indeed

I was camping on Mcgavoc Hill at the Raymond Battlefield, and got to chewing the fat with a bigwig in the Raymond Fencibles, and apparantly the people who own the part of the battlefeild where the texans were engaged with missourians in hand to hand combat, are changing the field into a gas station and a truck stop it is, as I stated, a sad day indeed

Could you please clarify this statement?

Apparently the people who own the part of the battlefield are going to do what?

I am with Paul, what makes it a sad day? The Texans in hand to hand with Missourians or that you was there?

It's a sad day here because I lost a CD and had to pay a pretty big fine at the library... It was a cool CD, too, and I forgot to burn a copy.

Received. “How now about the fifth and sixth guns?”
Sent. “The sixth gun is the bully boy.”
Received. “Can you give it any directions to make it more bully?”
Sent. “Last shot was little to the right.”
Received. “Fearfully hot here. Several men sunstruck. Bullets whiz like fun. Have ceased firing for awhile, the guns are so hot."

Tyler may mean a portion of the land outside the small battlefield holding is going to be on the market soon.

As mentioned on the Hard Case Boys Forum, "Some battlefield property not already part of the park, that was purchased from funds raised in '98, is thought to be coming on the market soon. They want to acquire this to add to the existing park. - Ricky "Mississippi Boy" McCraw, Poison Ivy Mess
Tyler and Ricky probably know each other. ;)

I have very pleasant memories of metro Raymond, Miss., circa 1998, and I hope the F.O.R. folks are able acquire more land for the battlefield park.

            Re: a sad day indeed

I must admit that I am a little confused with Tyler's statement also. The Friends of Raymond (MS) own McGavock's Ridge where COL Randal McGavock was killed on May 12, 1863 while commanding the 10th Tennessee Infantry (Irish). McGavock was from a wealthy Nashville family and was Harvard educated. He also served as Nashville's mayor. The ground on which he fell is certainly hallowed ground. Although, there is a Confederate cemetery in Raymond, Randy Mac's remains were returned to Nashville where I believe he is buried in Mount Olivet(sp) Cemetery.
I am not familiar with the Texans fighting the Missourians in hand-to-hand combat. The 7th Texas anchored the right flank of the Confederate line and was decisively engaged with the 20th Ohio in some of the heaviest fighting of the Battle of Raymond. The 10th/30th Tenn and 50th Tenn anchored the left flank of the Confederate line and were opposed by the 7th Mo(US).
Regardless, the Raymond Battlefield is a very threatened. It needs the continued support of preservationist, and it is good to bring the battlefield to the attention of those that visit this forum. Raymond is not too far from Vicksburg, and it might be a nice day trip for the lads attending the Vicksburg event.
            Regards,
