So, you think that scrap in the East is rough, do you?
Ever consider what it means to be captured by Apaches?

Let us not forget...

... he had little-to-no formal education but still became a successful lawyer and politician.
... all the court cases he won.
... the fact he won the debate with Douglas.
... his legendary eloquence despite the fact he had a relatively poor speaking voice.
... his physical strength which was genuine.
....the fact that he won re-election in 1864 (thanks in no small part to the Union soldiers who voted for him.)
... that fact that he won the war.

Happy Birthday, Sir. May God Bless President Abraham Lincoln, the Great Emancipator and Savior of the Union!
Bill Carey
He is out of bounds now. He rejoices in man's lovely,
peculiar power to choose life and die—
when he leads his black soldiers to death,
he cannot bend his back. - Robet Lowell, For the Union Dead

I'm not sure this was motivated by "lost causer" mentality. It demonstrates that Lincoln could handle failure and criticism - he could never have seen the war through otherwise. His flexibility and open mindedness led to the turning point of the war - New Orleans. While the Confederate command and political machine couldn't conceive of an attack on that city from the sea and wouldn't listen to voices that warned (such as Lovell), Lincoln listened to his Naval experts. He allowed the planned attack to go forward, even though none of this scale had been successfully attempted before. The resulting capture was as much Lincoln's victory as Farragut's. While we tended to deify him later and obscure his true character, he was still a remarkable man in all respects. Happy Birthday Abe!

"The publick give credit for feat of arms, but the courage which is required for them, cannot compare with that which is needed to bear patiently, not only the thousand annoyances but the total absence of everything that makes life pleasant and even worth living." - Lt. Percival Drayton, on naval blockade duty.

"We have drawn the Spencer Repeating Rifle. It is a 7 shooter, & a beautiful little gun. They are charged to us at $30.00. 15 of which we have to pay."
William Clark Allen, Company K, 72nd Indiana Volunteers, May 17, 1863

Look up 'Perseverance' in your dictionary. That's what the post was about and to recognize his b'day. Instead of resorting to name calling.

It's sad

That a discussion of a pivotal person is American history by so called living historians can result in this thread.
