I recently made a very small, unscientific observation that could have some merit here.
I few days ago I was performing the routine maintenance on my Sam Doolin made Gardner cherry wood canteen. Even though I have always put a couple of drops of chlorine bleach in the water stored in the canteen*, the cypress stopper had molded and turned black underneath the light coat of beeswax that Sam applied.
Out of curiosity I stuck a flexible fiber optic scope and a bore light in to look around. The inside of canteen has no wax coating and absolutely no discoloration or fungus. The only mold is on the wax covered stopper.
You can interpret this anyway you see fit but I take this as another fine reason not to line a canteen.
