  • Tait Jacket Photos

Does anyone have any photos, they would kindly like to share of any existing Tait jackets?
Particularly interested in the Garrett Gouge, or Hugh Lawson Duncan jackets, which are piped around the collar and shoulder tabs in blue.

    Many thanks,

There are a few pictures in the Library of Congress. There is one of a dead soldier at Petersburg. The soldier has a Tait and Federal cartridge box on. The Tait looks like it has a solid collar.

      Re: Tait Jacket Photos

Many thanks gents. But what I'm primarily looking for, is any new photos taken by someone who may have examined any of the Tait's
Especially the Duncan and Gouge jackets.I know this maybe a long shot , but its so difficult living "over the pond" to get any decent photos of uniforms & equipment. So if someone could help???

The real oddball Tait, or the oddest one of all.....

There is in existence a red trimmed Tait that is in a private collection. This jacket has epaulettes shaped like bowling pins. Anyone ever seen pics or the original piece ? I have heard rumors but have never seen the piece.

Also, has anyone ran across any of the untrimmed Tait's ?

I haven't seen that, but Dave Jurgella has. He sketched out the epaulettes for me, but his sketch looked more like a part of the male anatomy rather than a bowling pin. :confused_

I'm supposed to see Dave on Friday and I'll find out if he has any images to share.

            Scott,
Are you sure this is a Tait???
Could you describe it in further detail?

Scott: The Glennan (36th NCT) jacket in the MOC is, or should I say was, untrimmed. The red collar trim is an add-on, I believe.

This is a sad subject but didn't we lose 1 or 2 Tait's at Beauvoir due to Katrina?

                  Doug,
I believe the Tait worn by Ord Sgt Marcus De Lafayette Taylor Co E 63rd Tenn Inf - The Tait jacket with solid blue collar and shoulder straps - was unfortunately lost when Katrina struck.

                    Dave,

I know who's collection that this jacket is in and it is definitley thought to be a Tait. I really don't want to reveal the owners name due to possible security issues, but he is a well known CW historian.

Chris, Jurgella told me about this one also. And yes, it seemed to resemble a part of the male anatomy from his description. However, I have seen pictures of this jacket somewhere over the last 28 years. ( almost 30 years of this hobby, I feel old) I just don't remember where.

Bob, even though it's in Richmond, I have never looked at this jacket due to it's having been modified. I am thinking that this jacket was also relined ?

Scott: The Michael C. Glennan jacket was "considerably altered" according to MOC catalog and shortened to a 7 button front. Catalog further says "unbleached linen lining in body and sleeves." It does have Tait size markings in lining. I have personally never seen and only know from catalog references. It has unusual triangular collar insignia also. He was aide-de-camp to Col. Lamb at Ft. Fisher before being captured there. Jacket is no doubt a Wilmington import (well, duh!).

                        Doug,
Was not just 2 Taits, but an entire display's worth of British import stuff they ran one summer called "A Bounty from Ireland" along with an untrimmed jacket made of BG kersey.
