I will be travling to Florida this weekend for a wedding in the Deltona/Deland/Daytona Beach area. Is there any historic sites that I might or should try to see. First time there, so let me know.

Re: Historic Sites in Florida
There is a beautiful State Park just north of Deland, DeLeon Springs State Park. Not just a scenic spot, but an interesting bit of CW history, as the mill on the grounds was burned in a raid during the war. They tore up the works of the mill and threw them in the spring, and some of the gears are on view.Andrew Batten

Re: Historic Sites in Florida
Just West of Jacksonville on I-10 is the Olustee battlefield, in Fernandina beach is Ft. Clinch which was built during the war and is garrisoned the first weekend of each month, St. Augustine has the Castillo de San Marco which was known as Ft. Marion during the war, and ther is a new park in Jacksonville (Camp Milton) where there was a garrison during the war and some of the earthworks are still visible. Also just north of Jacksonville is the Kingsly Plantation.
Built by the Spanish in St. Augustine to defend Florida and the Atlantic trade route, Castillo de San Marcos National Monument preserves the oldest masonry fortification in the continental United States and interprets more than 450 years of cultural intersections.
Of course a couple of hours north is Savannah and northwest in Geoargia is Andersonville.
Also in Jacksonville is Ft. Caroline which is much earlier than our period.

Re: Historic Sites in Florida
There are also the Second Seminole War sites, you have the Dade Battlefield over near Tampa, then closer to Daytona is Fort Christmas.

Re: Historic Sites in Florida
Daniel;
If you come a bit further south past Tampa, you'll find the Gamble Plantation in Ellenton Florida.
From the website;
This antebellum mansion was home to Major Robert Gamble and headquarters of an extensive sugar plantation. It is the only surviving plantation house in South Florida. It is believed that Confederate Secretary of State, Judah P. Benjamin, took refuge here after the fall of the Confederacy, until his safe passage to England could be secured. In 1925, the house and 16 acres were saved by the United Daughters of the Confederacy and donated to the state. Today, the mansion is furnished in the style of a successful mid-19th century plantation. Guided tours of the house are given six times a day, Thursday through Monday and there are picnic tables on the grounds. The visitor center is open from 8:00 a.m.-4:30 p.m., Thursday through Monday; it is closed on Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Day, and New Year´s Day. Located in Ellenton on U.S. 301 East.

Here we are, some with whole skins, and some not so whole. Others have been left behind. For myself, I can only wonder if there is a bone left in my carcass when I think of the wholesale carnage through which I have passed. My bruises are inward.

Re: Historic Sites in Florida
Thanks to everyone for the information. We didn't have as much time as we wanted since the groom didn't get things done. But we are going to visit these sites on our next Florida vacation.Thanks
