  • How Many Battlefields Have You Slept On?

One of the great joys of doing living history and reenactments is the opportunity to bivouac where the Boys of '61 slept. So I put to you gentlemen: upon which battlefields have you slept? For me the list is pathetically small:
    1. Fort Donelson
    2. Stones River
    3. Chickamauga
    4. Perryville
    5. Saylors Creek
    6. Petersburg -Hatchers Run
    7. Payne's Farm
    8. Fort MacAlister
    9. Gettysburg
    10 Fort Fisher, NC

Re: How Many Battlefields Have You Slept On?

Hmm, let's see what I recall ... I've visited lots of sites and participated in living histories in the approach areas involved with fighting, but these are the only battlefields on which I've slept:

    Lexington, Mo.
    Fortescue, Mo.
    Wilson's Creek, Mo.
    Perryville, Ky.
    Raymond, Miss.
    Manassas, Va.
    Gettysburg, Pa.
    Port Hudson, La.
    Spring Hill, Tenn.
    Lookout Mountain and environs.

Brings back some interesting recollections ...

I've not slept on any, but from a cullinary point of view I've eaten or drank:
      Corn from Millers Cornfield (Antiedam)
Peaches from the two Peach Orchards (Gettysburg and Shiloh)
Filled my canteen from Spangler's Spring (Gettysburg)

Re: How Many Battlefields Have You Slept On?

These lists sort of remind me of the old t-shirt you'd buy at a rock concernt where the band listed on the back of the shirt all the stops on their current tour. Anyway, here's where my roadies took me; list may be incomplete.

                        1. Cedar Creek, VA
                        2. New Market, VA
                        3. Monmouth, NJ (RebWar battlefield hosting a CW event; never did quite figure out that one...)
                        4. Pamplin Park, Petersburg VA
                        5. Brandy Station, VA
                        6. Bentonville, NC
                        7. Gettysburg (couple different areas)
                        8. McDowell, VA (well, bivouacked in the town near the battlefield itself...)
                        9. Cold Harbor, VA
                        10. Campton's Gap (South Mountain), MD
                        11. Fort Pulaski, GA
                        12. Harrison's Landing, VA
                        13. Perryville, KY
                        14. Antietam, MD
                        15. Pickett's Mill, GA
                        16. Chancellorsville, VA (NPS property)
                        17. Fredericksburg, VA (NPS property)
                        18. Rich Mountain, WVa
                        19. Second Bull Run, VA (NPS property, different sites)
                        20. Fort Niagara (Youngstown, NY - a battlefield in the F&I War and War of 1812, but still hosting a CW event...)
                        21. Newtown (near Elmira, NY - another RevWar battlefield hosting a CW event...)
                        22. Payne's Farm/Mine Run, Locust Grove, VA

I could swear I'm forgetting some...
