  • West Virginia Civil War medals

This goes out to all the folks out there that had an ancestor that served in a West Virginia unit during the war. It seems that the state of West Virginia issued medals after the war to those that served. However, many of these medals went unclaimed and are now held at the West Virginia state archives.Descendants may claim their ancestors medal after providine proof of lineage.Further information can be found at the West Virginia state archives website.

They are very serious about these medals getting into the proper families. You have to be exact in your proof. Then your paperwork is held for 6 months to give others a chance to prove they are more of a direct line than yourself. I believe there are a few hundred medals left.
