May 31, 1863 letter from camp near Fredericksburg Va. to his sisters Jane & Alice French.
" When we came across the river the last time a man in co. H dropped down and the doctors said he was dead. So the men in the company burried him as well as they could with their bayonets and left him. He is now in Washington having come to life and not being covered very deep over his face got out and as soon as he was up the rebs got him. He has been paroled and is in Washington".
