This morning I was gifted with the ability to examine an original Sailcloth Haversack, while badly deterioated it matched the dimensions of CJ Daley's model w/in a 1/4". It was unique in that it had a bit of fishing net sewn into the front face. The owner suggested that it had been sewn there to hold the mans canteen. I doubted this but the owner took a repop smoothside canteen and slid it in the net and it fit fairly well.
When purchased there was a can of tinned meat w/in still sealed. I was able to examine it, when shaken it rattled! Sam said it was full of rocks!
What I'm wonder is if anyone has seen any kind of reference to such a thing.
The provenance of the item had it w/ a man from the 52nd Illinois who went from Chatanooga to the Sea; ended up w/ a case of dysentery over Christma of 64/65 and was sent home.
Thanks
