  • Gravestone dedication for Payne's Farm Vet

    Friends,
The gravestone dedication for the color bearer of the 4th Virginia who was killed at Payne's Farm, Sgt. Jacob Lawrence, went off well on May 5th. About 150 people were in attendance, including an honor guard of local SCV members. The gravestone looks good. I'll try and post a picture of it here.

    Joe -
Can you provide the text of that inscription? It's illegible beyond his name.

      Paul,
I believe I have a close-up photo at home. I'll try and get the text off of that and post it here.

        Joe & Paul,
I believe the inscription reads as follows. If I have misread or badly guessed at anything, please correct the error.

Company B, 4th Virginia Infantry, CSA
        Born 1840, Augusta County
Wounded at Payne’s Farm on 27 Nov. 1863
While gallantly bearing the colors of the regiment against the foe.
        Died 25 Feb, ???
        Montgomery Co.
        From his Civil War wounds

          John,
You have it exactly right. The year of his death was 1868. I thought he died during the battle, but as the gravestone says, he died "from his Civil War wounds".
