  • Haunted Gettysburg

My wife, who is an amateur ghost hunter (ie. in the same vain as the TAPS fellas on the SciFi Channels 'Ghost Hunters' show) will be going to Gettysburg to stay in the Farnswworth House in a few weeks. It is her first trip to Gettysburg, and she is not as... uh... enthusiastic about the Civil War as I. I'm sure some of you here on the forum have heard of some strange activites in Gettysburg, and on the Battlefield. I'd appreciate it if any of you would share some recommended places for her to visit.

    Thanks

    Hey Brian,
I am not a "believer", but there are always large numbers of people doing the ghost thing around sun down at Devil's Den and Spangler's Spring......Jerry Stiles

The "Ghost World" conference is there the weekend of 20-22 July, but most any day around dusk you can see folks wandering around trying to photograph orbs. This adds just so much to living history events.

Some "hot" sites liked by our ghost hunting friends are the triangular field by Devils Den. Also the Sachs Covered Bridge is reported to be pretty haunted.

Orbs! Nahhh... she has no interest in Orbs. Nothing but multi-lense reflections, dust particles... whatever. But definitely nothing related to any kind of Ghostly activity.

I'll pass along what's been suggested so far.

ditto!! I've camped there before and it gives me goosebumps just thinking about it. Keep a look out for old Green Eyes!

In Gettysburg, I would also suggest her stopping by the Pennsylvania Monument on Cemetery Ridge. There is supposed to be some activity there too.

Tell me more about the Snodgrass cabin. I was just there and it didn't seem like a very spooky place.

                  Brian,
Is she staying in the Farnsworth house for sure? If not, the Cashtown Inn is internesting. My wife and I stayed there several years ago, right around the time the Ghost of Gettysburg book and videos were out. We stayed in the attic which has been turned into a bedroom and bathroom. The room had several journals from past vistors to sign and record their experiences. The videos were also in the room and the filming of the Cashtown Inn ghost was filmed in the room we were staying in. This certainly added to the drama. My wife could not sleep in the room because of all the squeaks and natural creeks in the room. I woke up occasionally and didn't see anything, but it was a great experience.

There are frequent Living Histories conducted at the Penna monument, with guys camping on the premises. I've done it myself. Even with insomnia the second night there the only activity I saw was guys getting up to "p" in the night. :wink_smil

Supposedly, there are ghost sightings at the Pennsylvania Monument and around the area. That is just what I have heard and thought it would be something neat for her to check out--if she is the "intuitive" sort.

                          Re: Haunted Gettysburg

I was fortunate enough to live in Gettysburg for 4 1/2 years. As a poor, geeky kid without a car or a girlfriend, I had the opportunity to spend LOTS of time on the battlefield, much of it...uh..."after hours".

Alas, I never SAW anything scarier on the field than some locals coming home from a night at the tavern. Still, I can vouch for a few places that raise the hackles on the neck:
                          1) Iverson's Pits (on the eastern end of McPherson's Ridge, near where it merges into Oak Ridge). A group of us encountered a cold spot of rare distinction on late Spring day.
                          2) The Triangular Field (Wiekert's Field on the reverse face of Devil's Den). Many people have experienced electromagnetic disturbances there, and I was one of them (my incident was written up in Volume 4 of "Ghosts of Gettysburg").

None of the other spots frequently mentioned got a rise out of me. I have slept in one of the allegedly haunted rooms in the Farnsworth House and even took a late night nap on the Pennsylvania Monument (it was my 21st birthday, and I needed to "rest" before driving home from the pub).

One other place I will mention. It never affected me, but I have taken two different people around the field who had the same experience at almost the exact same spot. On the front face of Devil's Den (facing Little Round Top), just north of the path that leads through the rocks. Both of the people I was guiding were overcome with a feeling of nausea, experiencing dizziness and an overpowering smell of blood.

Me, I didn't feel a thing. I almost feel left out! Still, any chance to stroll around Gettysburg is a good excuse.

I have slept in that covered bridge a number of times and it sometimes creaks when a company of reenactors walk through it...and fireflies sometimes are seen there, both key paranormal indicators. The Triangular field and other places have lots of deer and smaller animals which as most of you know are really the souls of dead soldiers doomed to walk the battlefield chasing bugs, lizards and eating plants. Soldiers never get a break

If you want to see real ghosts, they tend to congregate almost exactly along the in town ghost tour routes...

The real reason the Casino was defeated had more to do with upsetting the cosmic paranormal balance of Gettsyburg than any silly notions of preservation, etc...

Good on her Brian - glad she is going and hopefully she can throw the cloak of good sense over at the least the ridiculous ghost tours!!!

There is tons to do outside of the Ghost tours for those who don't like history. There are plenty of wine vinyards, Boyds Bears, Outlet stores, scenic train rides, performing arts centers.

Here is a short list of historical and non-historical things to do within a few minutes drive of Pickett's Charge:
