  • Fun With Drill

As a spin-off on R.J.'s firing while advancing and walking thru the stacks threads, this is something Marse Craddock did to me at the Granger before last. He was drilling the right wing of the battalion while I had the left. At the conclusion he marched up till the wings were facing one another, me facing south & he facing north as crudely shown below. He then ordered me to place the left wing back where it belongs. There are number of ways to do this and I'm looking for creative solutions.

Have Craddock Right Face and march off to the right aways to give you some space. Halt. Front.
Then Duffer can Right FAce as well.....by File Left.....by File Left and Halt when they close up on you. Front.

BTW, 6th WVI fired while Charging at the RR Coat....loading at will and firing 2 or three times in less than 150 yards. Mickey Sullivan.

      R.J.

Please note that a lowly captain does not " Have Craddock Right Face and march off to the right a ways to give you some space " :) . Right wing stands fast - Left wing moves.

        Or...

Have Craddock right face and forward march to clear your front, he halts, fronts and dresses. You advance your men until they are in line with Craddock's, halt, do an about face and dress the line on him.

Whoops, never mind. Was typing while the above was being posted.

Then do the second half of what RJ said - Right face, forward march and a couple of by file lefts to come up on the flank, front and dress on Craddock.

Probably not as 'creative' as you wanted but it would work.

Perhaps a little more creative but not as simple:

Do an about face and a right wheel to the perpindicular, forward march until you clear his line, right wheel, forward march to pass his line, right wheel, forward march until your right is on his left then right wheel into line.

That will have the boys belly-aching!

Mr. Comer - both cases you end up inverted.

The left wing, will "break to the left, to march to the right" the guided can be posted so that the column passes in the rear of the right wing. Marching with the left in front, at full distance they can then perform "right into line, wheel. March." then dress on up to the right wing.

Well your map stops pretty suddenly on the left edge of the paper....for all we know there's a 50 foot cliff (going up or down) on the left edge of the paper.

So have the lowly WING Commander move a little longer by the Right flank to allow him to clear Craddock. Then two By File Left. A Halt , Front, Dress Right.
the 2nd By File left should align on the rear rank of Craddock's file closers....so when you halt and front the company ends up in a position just like when forming a battalion by successive companies.

                          Re: Fun With Drill

                          3 options that seem appealing:

                          1. Perhaps a march by the right flank with a counter march, halt (when desired location is reached), front, right dress.

                          2. Break into column of companies to the right, 2 left turns in column, then a left turn into line and right dress.

                          3. Or march by the right flank, halt, front, by right of companies to the front, counter march...nevermind, to freakin complicated.

                          option one seems the easiest.

                            Re: Fun With Drill

Let's have fun with a closed column. But I'd need to know how many companies comprised the wings - for my "fun" let us assume a 6 company battalion, with 3 in each wing.

Start by going from line to closed column:

1] Close Column by Company - on the 4th Company - Right in Front. Wing - Right Face - March.

(place markers in front of where the 4th Company would belong, prolonging the right wing, and warn the Capt. of the 4th Co. what he was to do.)

2] Into Line, Faced to the Rear. Wing - Right Face - MARCH

This next example would be even more fun - though not as simple (and simplicity is elegence). I'm also going to interpret the 'crude' drawing as having enough space between the two wings to pull of the right oblique. (If there weren't, March in Retreat to make the required space, and then face forward again.)

1] Close Column by Company - on the 4th Company - Right in Front. Wing - Right Face - March.

2] Column, Forward, Guide Left , March

                            (then immediately)

3] Right Oblique - March (until you just clear the left flank of the Right Wing - then Forward March) Continue forward until the last (6th) Company is about 3 paces past the Right Wing. - Column Halt

4] Countermarch, Companies - Right and Left Face - March - Guides Posts

(post a couple markers in front of the column - in line with the Right Wing)

5] On the 4th Company -Deploy Column, - Battalion - Left Face - March. Guides - Posts.

Since the companies come on line in a successive formation, the left wing would now be at Support Arms, so one might want to conform to the position of the senior wing.

                              Too easy....

                              1. Right face

                              2. On the right by file into line

                              3. Either

                              a. about face, forward march (halt when aligned with the right wing) and execute a second about face & right dress.

                              or

                              b. post a guide on the left flank of the right wing and simply order "right dress."

You march the shortest distance, and execute the manuever the fastest, if you do it this way.
