  • Trying Something New!

Hey Fellas. The NSR has a new page on our website showing the transition of a Tar Heel during several points on the Civil War Time-Line. I'm curious as has any other units/groups tried something similar. We do the soldier talks at every living history and the uniforms are a huge deal when being specific to a particular campaign. Check it out...

Very cool. I wish my unit had as much research on our uniforms and what not, or that I were in a North Carolina Regiment.

Very impressive indeed, bully for the NSR for incorporating this visual aspect into their website.

          Re: Trying Something New!

Very interesting indeed. A couple of critques as new people come to your site who aren't veterans of research or maybe just simply not in the know of North Carolina troops' clothing andn equipment...

It may be helpful to have some direct quotes about the transportation and supply of the uniforms and equipage.

It may be helpful to know the sources consulted.

Finally, the only part of the uniform not really mentioned that is visible are shoes. Where'd they come from? Richmond? Mobile? Columbus? NC? Home?

Otherwise, I find it pretty cool as I don't know much about uniforms of NC troops. Thanks for that visual aid.

            Re: Trying Something New!

Thanks fellas and thanks Emanuel for the advice. "Don't shoot the messenger". Ha ha!

It has been a long time coming just to get to this point. This actually started a couple of years ago and this is simply a beginning. We(NSR) have tried to just implement some of what we do at living histories since it's a basic and fundamental part of what we are conveying. If we try and directly answer "every" specific question as to why, where, how, etc. here on the website, we could get bogged down in the splitting of a cotton thread. In an informative glance as to what exactly we are wearing at a snapshot within the time-frame I believe we have done OK. You have to start somewhere.

BTW, NC did produce shoes and our guys are actually wearing some we had made from a pair that were on display at the NC Museum of History worn by John Phfifer; a soldier who actually wore a pair home from Appomattox. And some are wearing British Import shoes smuggled through the blockade. Maybe even a captured pair off a dead Dutchman(Clue- look at that good looking soldier from 1864:wink_smil). That all depends on which part of the puzzle we are trying to fill. I'll have to get my best man right on that part as well.

As far as the sources, we have an extensive list of articles and sources on the NC soldier on a separate page. You should read those sometime and click over and see the impressions they are talking about. I wanted to actually post pictures of original soldiers next to our impressions but of course copyrights get into play then...We did a little with what we could.

I wish I had the time to write an article about the Phfifer shoes though. Good idea though.

But back to my original question. Has any other units tried doing this with say a Georgia soldier? A Tennessee soldier? A Louisiana soldier? I was just curious.

            Thanks again.

Thanks Mark for getting me a "clue" as well as explaining some info I didn't know like NC shoe manufacture.

              I totally support this idea.

I'm very visual and having the pictures explains things far better than words alone could.

Would you mind if I passed the link along to some of the writers on CompuServe's Books and Writers forum? Several of the members over there are working on period novels, North Carolina history, and so forth.

That photo presenation might be the best unit website supplement i have seen yet. Educational and informative as well as useful for the beginner to learn off of. Now the next question....does everyone in the unit outfitted in every kit. If so kudos!!!

                      Re: Trying Something New!

A great model. I'd really like to see a database like this created for many different units and their phases throughout the war. Federal and Confederate based on all research available. This morning prior to seeing this I had been thinking extensively about how great it would be to have a website that catalogs all the research here, public photos, all of my personal research and other sources i have come a across... constantly added to, but a resource for everyone. From patterns of uniforms folks are willing to share publicly to documentation of issue of certain items. Also a database of 1850-1860 civilian occupations, job descriptions, common knowledge about those practices. Pop culture of the 1850-1860s..
Instead of everyone scouring sources for their individual impressions and losing research over time, or keeping it boxes up with the other mountains of research in your personal library, I'd like to see it all as common knowledge. Call me a socialist, but if we could all just share this information everyone's impression would improve. We'd see more uniformity at mainstream events (I Think we do a good job with I/P/HC events with the great detailed guidelines for that specific event, but if we had all of those documented impressions cataloged somewhere, it would help us 10 years from now when we decide to do it again.
I'd really like to see the AC as a platform which springs all of us into creating something like this.

Great site Mark! To chime in with the rest, I think it will be very helpful to new living historians. I would like to see units in each theater do this same thing. It would be great to have one section, even here on the AC dedicated to each army and the changes in uniforms and equipment, north and south, ANV, AOT, Trans-Miss, etc. Would take some work, but would be a good place for beginners to start at least.

                          Justin,
I'd like to see us go as deep as possible. Different Brigades / Regiments in each army had varying levels of wear and tear as well as issue even at the same time due to where they were positioned in the grand scheme of things. This is a great model but deeper than ANV/AOT/ATM If we could divide that up by brigade/Regiment that would be ideal.

Now that everyone feels so inspired, lets get to work!

                            Hey,

Just a correction. The North Carolina Quartermaster Department did not produce shoes for North Carolina soldiers...at least in the 1862-1865 period. Tar Heel troops received them from Confederate Quartermasters in Richmond just like every one else. The C.S. QM had a number of small shoe contractors in North Carolina, but they served Richmond, not Raleigh.

                            Chris "Mr. May 1863" Graham

p.s. If NC had produced its own shoes, the would undoubtedly been far superior to what Richmond made.
