  • Who are these fellows

Many years ago I took some photos of a Mudsill muster in the midwest.
I have lost my notes, and the negatives, and cannot recall who these fellows were, or where I took the pictures.
Would any readers of this BB be able to identify the time, place, or participants?
I have no plan to publish these, just wish to recall...

    Re: Who are these fellows

    Hallo!

I was chatting near a mini Mudsill's "reunion" yesterday and looking at some pictures from the mid 1970's.

I e-mailed the pictures to a post 1974's Mudsill friend that I think is in the pictures. I will report back when he responds...

In the 3rd picture, the 2nd fully pictured gentleman from the left in the front rank (standing next to the man in the tan colored hat) I believe is Tom Rock. It sure looks a lot like him and he was a member during this time period. I haven't seen him in years, but I'll bet my bottom dollar that's him.

Hasn't Cal Kinzer been floating around the forum(s) lately? Try giving him a shout, he'd probably know.

It could be Tom Rock, but it's hard to tell. He's got some of the same facial features, but if I had to make the call, I would say it's not him. I've never seen Tom wear his cap that way but like I said, it's hard to tell.

I've seen some of these guys before, but I have no names.

I would say the best guy to ask from this forum is, John Wedeward. His screen name is "Weed," and I bet he would know some names.

I joined the Mudsill's about 1978 or 1979 (It's been way too long ago) and I don't recognize anybody but I'll send copies to Tom & Alan Rock and see if they know. The guy in the light hat looks like George Derenburger.

              Brian,

If you contact Tom, send my regards. He was also my 8th grade history teacher!

There was a poll about whether our authenticity has Progressed or not......

obviously we're much better than these, our more recent, predecessors.

The sideburns remind me of the old college days in the 70's.....

here's a picture of George Derenburger at Fort Wayne, 1977.

Looks like a 4th Corps badge on the officer.

                  Re: Who are these fellows

I talked with Tom Rock tonight after sending him several of the pictures and they are the Mudsills taken in the 1970's (my best guess is around 1976, as I've seen several pictures of them from that time period). Tom & Alan Rock are in there, Tom id'd Phil Rodiguerro and Steve Kuhn too.

RJ, the Mudsills did an 1864 Army of the Cumberland impression so the wearing the 4th corp badge by them was common during that time. When I got into the hobby in 1976, their were 3 "good" authentic units at the time, The Mudsills, Sherman's Bummers & the 1st Minn. in the Midwest...time have changed.

                      Steve,

These images are bfore my time. I joined the 15th Illinois in 1979-1980 (part of the Mudsills), but I don't recognize anyone. The one fellow does look like Tom Rock, but difficult to say for sure. I wanted to say that Derenburger formed the Mudsills in 1975 or 1976. Tom and Alan Rock were members then.

RJ, I forgot Derenburger was ever that young...and thin!

Yes, authenticity has improved in 30 years, at least for some of us.:wink_smil

Tom and Alan Rock are doing World War II Marine Corps these days. However, Tom is talking about getting the old "Hodge Podge Mess" back together for some farb fest in Illinois this fall.

Hey back to you Tom. Our oldest son was married, finally, in your fair state in late June. We dropped enough green to keep the curds happy.
Scott, if the Rocks pull it together, as a non-ex Mudsill I could not participate, but I would love to know so I could get the cane/wheelchair consession.
                              I could also donate Weed...
