I'm not in those particular photos, but I must chuckle at how awful we looked in those days.... I was there at Springfield, Illinois in 1975 when we made Rocky Higginbotham our designated nametag wearer and started drilling together. The rest is history....[And a very fond memory..]
These pictues were taken at the event at Rockford, ILL sponsored by Camp Fuller and the 74th and 75th Illinions in 1976. Remember, as a "unit" the Mudsills had really only been an organized group for over 1 year at this time. So many years have passed and memory fades, but I see George Durenberger, Allen Rock, Andy Oren, Tony Brown, Terry Laird, John Krebs along with Phil R. carring the original flag we used to used. I do not see Tom Rock. I vagully remember being in the rear rank, thus not been in the pictures.
Remember, as Brian stated, there were only 3 good groups at that time, the 1st Minn., Sherman's Bummers, which a that time was basically breaking up, with a number of members ending in 5th Kentucky Vols. (The Mudsills) and the newly forming Mudsills. The hair length and the long side burns reflect more the "culture of the actuall "REAL time period", the early mid 1970's) rather than what would "emerge" in the look of the unit within a few years.
This is a quick glance. If I went to my picture albums, I'm sure I could match more names to faces. Also, if I put up some of the pictures of the Mudsills at Billie Creek Village (1978/9) you would start to see the "immediate change" in the apperance of the members (hair, side burns) and reconnize guys like Tom, Allen, Durenburger, Chris Kraft, Bob Willey, Russ McClellan, Steve McIssac.Bob Willey and many more imediately.
Brian is totally correct on the corps badge. The blue triangle, designating the third division of the 4th Army Corps, Army of the Cumberland, would (and will) allways be associated with the 5th Kentucky Vol's (Thomas's Mudsills) and the rise of authenticity in the hobby of Civil War reenacting.
DO NOT JUDGE what the beginning product looked like, in a few years, these pictures would look ENTIRELY DIFFERENT!!!

In these next photos taken at Billie Creek Indiana in 1978, two years later, the authenticity and faces are starting to come thru. These pictures include members like Tom Rock, Jay Crisp, Charlie Combites, Tim Fulmer, Terry Laird, Chris Craft, John Mlkenas, Butch Baker, Mark Johnson, Steve McIssak, Mike Postailwait, John Warnick, John Wedeward, Bob Blietz, Dave Burens, and many others that would help shape the hobby as we know it today.
Their is a GIANT impovement from the first meeting of individual groups in the fall of 1974 at Jefferson Barracks and those pictures taken in 1976 to this unit, less than 2 years later.
Also, notice the "familiar" blue 4th badge and the untrimed Hardee Hats and slough hats!

The general qestion is how many of these guys are still alive today? I could probably name almost everyone in the pictires, but they would just be names to most guys, unless you were an early and long time member.
For the record, I am second from the right in front of Steve McIssac and next to Mike Postalwait in the 3rd picture. Butch Baker is to the right of Mike. I also see Tom Brinkmier, John Krebs, Tim Fulmer, John Warnick, Dave Burehns down the line. Carl Luthen and the 7th Illinois Cavalry is behind us.

Speaking of the 15th Illinois (I was a member of that unit) and the 1st Minnesota. Way back when (about 1979) The Camp Chase Gazettee (started and edited by Bill Keitz) did a picture spread of the best impressions of easterners and westerners. Those two above units were considered the best, I have all the old CCG (it was smaller in size 8X8 at that time) some where, but I would have to start pulling display cases around looking to see what I did with them.
Maybe this weekend. It would be fun to reread Cal's Campfire Chats again.
We all wanted to be "On the Cover of The Camp Chase Gazettee") no offense to Dr. Hook and "The Cover of the Rolling Stone"
