  • My First Columbus Depot Project

almost done with my new CD type I. I had some of Tarts Sumac Dyed jeans from about 8 years ago, been storing it all this time. Used that, used some really nice osnaburg from Needle and Thread for the sleeve lining and some red/tan checked homespun from Needle and Thread for the l body lining. Charlie Childs pattern and his logwood dyed thread for all the handstitching. All I lack is the button holes and I'm done. I'll post pics when finished. I'm quite pleased, I only had two uh-oh's LOL

I've got to ask why you picked this particular lining when the originals all had osnaburg or similar cotton material:

Because I had enough of it and not enough of the osnaburg left from previous projects. It looks pretty darned good. Just got the sleeve linings finishes so now all I gotta do is button holes. My fingers are sore from all the hand stitiching so I'm gonna take a break.

Understood. I remember the first Columbus Depot I did off of that damned pattern (I use that term loosely) from Galla Rock. Arm holes messed up, pocket odd etc. Looking forward to the Charlie Childs pattern although I believe that too has problems.

Re: My First Columbus Depot Project

This pattern wasn't too bad BUT, it did not come with any instructions at all for putting the pocket on the front. I really didn't want it anyway. One of the first Columbus Depots I had was made by Charlie years ago and it has the pocket. I can't wear it anymore so my son does, but, I never used the outside pocket anyway. Hence this one follows the first patter and does not have it. I made a boo boo on the collar, you can see just a hint of the interfacing at the front of the collar on the left side. The other boo boo was that the point at the bottom of the back is there but it is sort of squared off. But.. it still looks pretty darned good if I may say so myself.

I'm going to put the dish faced wooden buttons on it when I can find them. Galla Rock carries them but I think she is out now. If you know someone else that stocks them please let me know.

What in your opinion is the best option for 'western theatre' CS trousers? I seldom get up to Virginia anyway.

          thanks

Bob Serio sells some really nice wooden buttons. They cost, but they are more like originals than what is offered by most sutlers. Honestly, most of them go into your usual arts and crafts stores and just pick up a supply and sell them for a profit, nothing special.
