  • Looking for my ancestor

I am not sure if this is where this belongs, but since I can't find a better place, here goes.

My Gr-Gr grandfather was Richard Clay Gibbs, and was a member of Co B 7th TN Inf (CS). I have his service record, but am hoping to bump into anybody with anyaccess to pictures or letters of anyone in the 7th TN Inf, of course most especially him. If anyone happens to have something related to him or the 7th TN, please let me know. There seems to be a general lack of info on this Reg't and my ancestors that might have had access to his stuff have all died off.

    Todd,

The U.S. Army Military History Institute (Carlisle Barracks) lists these 7th Tenn collections in their library:
    • Clendening, William A. - CWTI Coll
    • Hamilton, J.H. (Letters) - Leigh Coll

Additionally, there are a couple newspaper articles, written by veterans of that regiment, that you might consider tracking down:
    • James H. Moore, "At Spotsylvania/How Archer's Tennesseans Gave Relief to the Hard Pressed Center" in the Philadelphia Weekly Times, November 11, 1881
    • Amares, "The Battle of Chancellorsville - The Tennessee Brigade" in the Chattanooga Daily Rebel, May 22, 183

Six wartime letters of John F. Goodner appear in Hubert W. Lacey's The Goodner Family (Dayton, Ohio: 1961)

You might also consider contacting the Tennessee State Library and Archives, as they have quite a few Civil War manuscript collections.

Thanks. I had dug around the TN archives before with little luck. They list the roster and a few references to the unit here and there, but not much else.

You may want to spend a little time at the National Archives to see if they have his records.
