Anyone know of someone making hard sided cases to fit our muskets?

Check with Doug Cooper I know he has one that fits his musket. Not sure where he got it from.

        Justin,

FWIW, I used to use a long rifle hard case I purchased from that store whose name shall not be mentioned here. It wasn't long enough for my weapon, but it was more than adequate when I dismounted the barrel. Carrying it as two pieces, along with the bayonet and scabbard alongside, also seemed to please the check-in folks when I opened it to show them when questioned about it.

The one I purchased was a heavy black ABS plastic material with egg crate foam lining, and room for up to three locks. Virtually indestructable, lightweight, etc.

        Respects,

Hoppes makes a hard case for muskets. I will try to find the part number and post it later.

Is this like snakes on a plane?

Seriously, Cabela's carries a lockable hard case made by Flight Proof that's designed for black powder rifles and muskets. They're not cheap, though: $200, but you get what you pay for. The case has rollers, numerous handles, two locks, reinforced corners, egg foam inserts, water proof, bug proof, etc. It's pretty much indestructable. My weapons (a Bess, a Tulle, and a fowler plus assorted other pieces/parts) made it safely from DC to Florida last January.

The Mrs. used to live in VA and I just used a long box when I travelled down to see her. I wrapped my gun in plenty of bubble wrap and it made it there in fine condition. My gun was actually fairly new at the time (roughly 2 months old) so for me to fly it all over the east coast was a gamble on my part. Just give yourself some time upon checkin for proper paper work. Alot of the airport security are johnny on the spot when checking in a gun.

I purchased a steel gun case from S&S fire arms about 7 years ago for $225. It will hold two muskets and can be locked with a padlock. I have used it to send and receive numerous antiques with out any problems. Only thing, when you have two muskets in it, it is HEAVY!!!

                      Re: Muskets on a plane

Cabela's does offer a metal case that will hold at least two muskets up to the size of a Brown Bess or one of the M1842s, but as others have noted, they're proud of them.

Way back on one of the very early versions of the forum, Mike Murley posted a recipe he had used for making a locking airline case out of PVC piping and components. I can dig it out of the archives and re-post it if anyone's interested...

I searched the net and the local sources, Bass Pro Shop, etc., when I traveled to BGR. You can purchase a case that will fit, but as others have pointed out they are more expensive. I ended up purchasing a hard plastic case for under $35 at the aforementioned establishment and simply disassembled the rifle.

I swear by my Cabela's case. Bought it for about $80, and it's been on several cross country's with me. No need to break the weapon down, though it's so long that some baggage claims will not send it through the regular baggage terminal.

If you planning on flying with it I would avoid the cheaper hard sided case. I had the end of one break open. The rifle was disassembled to fit in the case. I was luckily no parts were lost but the tang got bent. Luckily I could bend it back into place for the event.

I found a case for about 100 at the Bass and Pro Shop. I have a pard who found one at The Sportsman's Warehouse for under 100.
