Anthony Bourdain in South Carolina

Hey all - this belongs as far from any Authenticity Discussion as it can get, but I saw a
commercial tonight for the "Anthony Bourdain - No Reservations" television show for next
Monday, Aug 17 ~ he will be donning Confederate gear for a show in one of the Carolinas
(sorry, did not catch if it was North or South.) I like his show, and, though any program
that dabbles in our hobby usually makes me cringe, I am hoping he will make it interesting,
and rise above the aw shucks stuff we usually are subjectied to. And he deals with food, so
he will hopefully be introduced to some of the more authentic fare of the Cornfed soldier.
Worth a look.

Anthony Bourdain rocks. My fiancée is actually interning at the production company that produces his show!

Anyway, if anyone would be respectful and pretty chill about it, I think he would. He ate raw seal off an Inuit family's kitchen floor... even the eyeball they offered as a sign of respect. If he did that and didn't descend to calling them stupid and gross, I think he'll be cool with things. Unless, of course, he runs into a bunch of yahoo whackos, which, I think, is the more likely scenario, and then you can't blame him for thinking they're nuts and skewering them.

I loved it when he said Dublin was his favorite city on earth, outside of New York. I wish I were back!

FYI, I saw a re-run of this episode on the Travel Channel the other day, and it got me hunting all realms of the internet for it (illegal copies or not). :confused_ Anyways, you can actually download it now from iTunes for $2 bucks. Simply search for it in their engine. Seems like he had fun! Considering it was the preamble scene to the show.

Wickersty, you might add that he drank cobra blood too. The dreaded question, he claims, that is always asked.

Mod Hat On: Let us post cautiously on this thread lest we delve into the realm of farbism and farb bashing.

I was fortunate enough to meet him at a library fundraiser last year. He is a really funny and interesting guy. Yes, this episode is a repeat and I have seen it before. He falls in with a group of "history-light" family-camping enactors and eats sumptuous stews cooked in a heavy camping setting.

Have heart, however! Bourdain can be "in your face" at times, but his approach to cultures different from his own tends to be balanced. His MO is to take a non-judgemental view of cultures from their own perspective. This includes being a gracious guest. While there was a lot of stuff in that show that would have been fodder for ridicule by most celebrity/media folk, Bourdain remained appropriately respectful.

And, for the record, if he'd been at Vicksburg last year, I firmly believe he'd have eaten the rat.
