    Script I button opinion?

    Hi,
    I wonder if anyone can offer an opinion on this button:-

    With my limited knowledge it looks OK, my question is really does anyone know whether there are copies out there that could possibly look this good when aged?

    Hallo!

    Two questions there...

    I am not a button expert, so this is just IMHO....

    1. Yes, at appearance value, it appears to me that the button is ACW Period (Issacs, Campbell & Co.).

    2. Yes, with a little knowledge of chemicals, heat, abrasion, and their use alone or in combination quality copies can be made to look Period.
    Sometimes not even that. Reproductions of clothing and gear from the Civil War Centennial are now showing up being sold as "originals" with just the 40-some years of sundry age and "patina" on them.
    In brief and to over-generalize though, what often gives repro buttons "away" is the back stamping- either being blank or carrying the current stamping of say "Waterbury," etc.

        Many thanks for the feedback, much appreciated - I've just ordered Warren K Tice's button book to arm myself with a little more knowledge before I think about delving into original buttons and making some expensive mistakes!

          On even the best repros I've seen of this button, the tail on the "I" is much shorter and the two "teats" coming off the left side of the center of the "I" are square, whereas on the originals they curve down as on your example. The backmark is the real kicker and is identical to that shown in Tice. I'd say the genuine item. Nice find.
