Re: Need Interviews for History of Reenacting

    David,

I sent you a PM with some Mudsill info. For artillery, Riley Gunter is your man. He participated in the Centenial and still is widely known in the mainstream today (VERY mainstream!). He at one time had the largest privately owned collection of Confederate cannon in the country and still uses original tubes today. Let me know if you have trouble locating him. Maybe I can help.

Thanks Bumpus, I will pursue that. Also, I already contacted Riley, just waiting for the response. I am happy that more people are starting to come in for interviews. Like I said before, I want to get as many as I can. It may take a long time, butI want to get as wide a view as I can on the history of reenacting.

You might want to contact Gordon Jones at the Atlanta History Center. He is working on his doctoral Thesis on reenacting around the world. You might be about to swap some research. I know he has been researching this for a few years.

just an update. I will be doing more work on this project in a few weeks once I get back home for my month break. Right now, I have to take care of getting ready for finals here at Gettysburg College. Thank you once again to all who have offered and given help.

              David,

I too, am interested in sending you a message. I don't however, have the time to tackle my perspective at the moment.

              I'll keep in touch.

Re: Need Interviews for History of Reenacting

Just an update. I am done with my first semester of college and have worked most of this week on my project. Just to give you an idea of what I have been doing, here is a sampling of what units I am getting/trying to get in contact with:
                -The Mudsills
                -1st Minnesota
                -1st Maine Cavalry
                -2nd Wisconsin, Company A
                -Potomac Legion
                -Western Independent Grays
                -North State Rifles
                -Army of Tennessee
                -Army of Northern Virginia
-26th North Carolina (the big one based out of NC)
-The Many Various Units of the Stonewall Brigade
                -Princess Anne Greys
                -Morton's Battery
                -Critter Company
                -Chesapeake Volunteer Guard
                -S.C.A.R.
                -The Western Brigade
                -The National Regiment
                -7th Tennessee Cavalry, Company D

and so many more that I can't recal right now. Its amazing, I haven't even touched the West Coast, the Southwest, or Europe yet! If anyone has any suggestions on other units to contact, I would appreciate this. I can say this though, since I began, I have made it a long way.

Also, the deeper I get into this, the more confused I get about one thing:
When dealing with the formation of battalion organizations back in the 70s and 80s, I get confused. How many organizations have the Mudsills been involved forming? All the following groups seem to be related somehow:
                -National Regiment
                -The Western Brigade
                -The Cumberland Brigade

and apparently the National Regiment split into a western and eastern batallion?

                      David:

Got your e-mail, I will give you my perspective & history of the "hobby" on the left coast after the holidays. In your above post you mention the Cumberland Brigade, do you mean the Cumberland Guard?

I can also give you some perspective on the Army of The Pacific as well, being one of the founders of said organization. I will get you in touch with some of the other Aof P founders as well if you would like.

Re: Need Interviews for History of Reenacting

Edward Parrott, sent you a email.

Bumpus, have already tried to get into contact with Alan, but not on that email, maybe he will respond to that one.

In concerns to the question above, I think the ultimate question is:
                        What is the difference between:
-The National Regiment (is it more like a brigade? it has a lot of units in it)
                        -The Cumberland Guard
                        -The Cumberland Brigade
                        -The Western Brigade

Is there any relation between the "Western Brigade" as in the one the 1st Division was formed off of and the "The Western Brigade of the National Regiment." that broke off of the National Regiment? It is getting quite confusing.

                          David,

I started in the late 1960's in the Midwest, spent some time with Sherman's Bummers, joined with Thomas' Mudsills in 1982, finally serving as commander 1996-2000. That organization now no longer exists as such. If I can be with any assistance, please feel free to contact me.

                              Wede,

Fine, fine as usual. You know I'm a Badger now? I live not far from the old Wisconsin Heights Battlefield of 1832. In fact I bumped into Bob Braun & co. at the 175th commemoration there. Black Hawk War period is intriguing me lately. I'll drop you a line so as not to let this thread get too far off topic.

                                David,

For further Mudsill research you might want to take a look at Bob Willey's recent book publication:

                                "Mudsill Atrocities and other Anecdotes"

It was published through Author House publishing.
