wonderful buttons, why no one reproduces this style of LINED LA Pelican button is beyond me. Most of the reproductions I have seen are crap.

Kind of off-topic, but not really. There is a wonderful collection of Louisiana uniform items on display at the Gordonsville Exchange Hotel in Gordonsville, Virginia. Apparently, all of the contents of a trunk found and donated in the post war years. If you're interested in Louisiana Uniforms, I suggest you check the place out the next time you're up this way!

I love the description of this frock - the seller is really hyping it with half truths and misinformation. The coat and vest were obviously not worn by Cormier when he was hit, but the seller speculates that small stains on vest buttons are blood. It has no collar rank, but seller says that is typical for post 1862 CS officers. He sells this stuff on E-bay because its eaiser to hype it there. Sheesh.

I saw this frock the other day and was really excited about it until the price processed in my head. It's a shame how stuff like this ends up on ebay. A year or so ago I saw an amazing great coat on ebay identified to a colonel in the federal Irish brigade, it really interested me because it actually was lined in dark blue flannel and had white hand stitching throughout the lining. I find the story interesting Captain Cormier having the ladies kiss him goodbye. This just makes me wonder how many interesting items we don't know about that are in private collections or even in an attic somewhere.

straying off a little here, but I can't help thinking that convincing re-production buttons are a weak point in the hobby generally - especially the English import types (with the exception of Ben Tart's Script I's). I for one would pay good money for lined Block I's, Script A's, Tait block A's & I's of an equivalent quality to Ben's buttons. I'm hoping 'the market' will recognise the demand one day....

Also the mind does boggle at what is quite probably out there in private collections or museum basements, largely unknown to most Civil War enthusiasts. A good friend of mine has a remarkable WW2 collection (here in the UK) and he seems to delight in 'rival' collectors not knowing what he has! Also, I was told by someone at the Imperial War Museum in London that they have only 5% of their collection on display (many of the exhibited items have annoyingly not changed significantly in probaly the last 20 years that I know of). I was reliably informed that there are crates of uniforms etc that have not been opened since they arrived at the museum in 1945 and earlier. I'm not saying that there might be unopened crates in the Smithsonian basement etc but I think there may be some parallels to my obseravtions above in the ACW sphere. Here's hoping..... :tounge_sm

Assuming this lot is legitimate, two things immediately come to mind:

1. The seller is trolling the waters to see if anybody is stupid enough to actually meet his price.

2. The seller knows he almost certainly wouldn't get what he's now asking. However, he still wants to see how high people are willing to bid, the better to determine its real market value.

I think I'll pass.
