  • Very interesting great coat picture

I found this imagine on ebay and found the buttons on the sleeves very interesting. I wondered if this may have been an addition of whoever added the paint, or if this is actually part of the coat. What does everyone else think?

Given the cuff facings, I'd bet that's a militia overcoat.

      Hallo!

"I wondered if this may have been an addition of whoever added the paint, or if this is actually part of the coat. What does everyone else think?"

Not an addition by the photographer when he painted gilt brass items.

I one looks at the cuff, it is not the "turned back" style of the Federal pattern greatcoat, but rather a variation with what some refer to as "Brandenburg" style cuffs- more likely a state issue or militia item.

Buttons were probably painted in later as there are not enough buttons on the cloak. However, I am sure there were many variations.

          Hallo!

The three buttons on the "Brandenburg" style cuff panel are consistent with the location/placement on Brandenburg cuffs.

And yes, the Federal foot pattern greatcoat had five body buttons and six cape buttons unlike this example.
