Are the dates listed above purchase dates (as I suspect) or dates of delivery?

The dates are delivery dates. Information was taken from Series 2224 BV990. There were dates of purchase, but they are not included with this post. If anyone is inerested they can refer to the the resource mentined above. Lots of information in this series regrading delivery dates, purchase dates, and issued equipment to individual regiments.

        Hallo!

"Information was taken from Series 2224 BV990."

Herr Christopher, you may want to list the full reference, or better yet the link, for lads who might want to explore further?

Re: Arming Ohio III (Enfield - 1861)

This will come as no news to most of you...but I am very confused. 2 days after Ft Sumter a load of Enfields from SH&G is delivered to the state of Ohio? SH&G had not arrived in Britain to procure Enfield contracts until May 1861. Presumably this is some sort of state contract brokered by SH&G pre-secession? Where did they go? It is a small order to be sure, they don't begin arriving in any appreciable quantity until after August...which is when Massachusetts began receiving what I thought where the first shipments of Enfields from Britain.

In "The Business of Civil War: Military Mobilization and the States" (Wilson), it states "Ohio and Wisconsin (during the first weeks of the war), like other states, sent purchasing agents east looking to buy weapons directly rather than waiting for the Ordnance Department officials to send them...a commission of agents visited several Eastern cities and concluded there were no weapons to be had in a reasonable period of time, and it was better to wait for deliveries from the national government." It also states, "SH&G, in addition to purchasing arms for the US military also bought arms for their own state. I would interpret that passage on their own state as "NY" not Ohio.

Yes I would like to have the link to those records.

Re: Arming Ohio III (Enfield - 1861)

Sorry for the inconvenience everyone. My apologies. Hopefully this information will help. I began my research about three years ago. I wanted to know what kind of equipment was issued to a specific regiment. During the process of gathering information I ended up with several spreadsheets pertaining to equipmet, arms, and uniform contracts. The information I provided was just one of those speadsheets. There are no links to view over the internet as far as I know. The information can be found at:
Ohio Historical Society - Archives Library
              Columubus, Ohio
              Ordnance and ordnance stores, 1860-1888
              Ohio Adjutant Generals Department
              State Archive Series 2224 BV990
              (its a pretty big book)

My researching days have come to an end. I have moved on to explore other things. I found the AC an excellent site where individuals have past along useful information that I myself have used in the past. Therefore, I am trying to do the same thing. I quess someone can pick up where I left off. I will try posting more information that pertains to total arms received by Ohio in 1861 and 1862, Enfield totals for 1862, and accoutrement totals for 1861. If you haven't noticed, my interest was 1861.
