  • "Keep fighting boys, I'll go fill the canteens"

There were two tapes of CW reenacting parody songs put out back during the 125ths by Matt Merta (spelling?). One was titled "Civil War Songs Mama Never Taught Me" and the other was "Keep Fighting Boys, I'll go Fill the Canteens."

Any old timers out there still have these, or know someone that could provide a copy? I'm especially interested in the "Keep Fighting Boys" one. It was destroyed years ago by an evil tape player.

There is an address for Matt Merta at http://www.geocities.com/boombarecords/stuff.html that you might want to try...

So, you think that scrap in the East is rough, do you?
Ever consider what it means to be captured by Apaches?

Not sure if it was by the same guy, but Farbing at Shiloh was always classic. Let us know what you find out for tracking down those tunes.

I know how to get in touch with Matt and my pard Will Eichler that posts here is a good friend of his. I talked to Will last night and let him know about this thread. You may get your answer on how to get copies of those songs pretty soon.

                Hi all,

Matt and I are close personal friends. We are also both active in the Historic Fort Wayne Coalition here in MI. Matt did a short run of burned CD's about a year ago and we talked about the possibility of doing a run of a better sort as a fund-raiser for Fort Wayne. You've put the gentle nudge in my back - I'll get on it.

More after I get a chance to ring up and chat with Matt.

                Best to all,

The songs sound like they would be great/funny to listen to! I will add a nudge to the previous ones.

I loved "We were all there together at the one-twenty-fives"

"...see the Classic Images tapes of the war...
it seems that we are all a little greyer than before..
...but we're still called childish, by our darling wives...
...we were all there together at the one-twenty-fives!"

If you could put those tapes onto a cd, I would be very grateful.

                          Duly nudged!

                          Brother Thad,

I've heard all of Merta's work and I quite sure "Farbing at Shiloh" came from anther purveyor of humor.

                          Best to all!

                            My favorite-

                            "Wait for the postman"

                            Greg Starbuck
The brave respect the brave. The brave
Respect the dead; but you -- you draw
That ancient blade, the ass's jaw,
                            And shake it o'er a hero's grave.
