  • Washing Domet Flannel

wore my Domet Flannel shirt for the first time this past weekend. Yes, it itches but it sure kept me warm~

however now it is inhabited with funk.

do you cold wash this stuff and hang it to dry out of the sun? Or?

    just curious

    Hey Comrade,
I have done several different type washings on my domet shirt. I have simply put it out on the line to air out, hand washed it at an event with cold water and a piece of castile soap, and once when it was real bad I washed it by hand with cold water and a little Woolite. It is getting nicely worn in and stained, despite the washings. Hope this helps.:D

When properly aired, wool releases a great deal of all that funk. Hang the shirt in a well ventilated place. Inside out, even better. Turn on the box fan, thats a real winner!

If you insist on washing, hand wash in tepid water and mild soap. Do not run water directly on the domet wool. Do not wring or twist. Roll in towel to absorb excess water, change towel and dry flat.

Do be careful exactly what type of mild soap is used. If the laundress should happen to inadvertently use the lavender milled soap rather than the laundry soap, it will smell up the whole hut when your package arrives back from the laundry, and your messmates will make fun of you. Or eyes at you. :p

I never wash my trousers or jackets but the shirts.. well.. hey, I sweat a lot LOL

maybe I'll just try airing it out first.. it does have that nice wood smoke smell along with everything else LOL

thanks for the tips though everyone

            (WARNING: non-period laundry item mentioned)
I have found microfiber towels very useful for getting water out of woolens of all sorts. I hand-washed a heavy wool crocheted square and squeezed the water out of it, then rolled it in a microfiber towel. It was nearly dry.
Unfortunately, you will never find documentation on an 1864 microfiber towel...but if you're home, it should pass.

Listen to Mrs. Lawson's washing advice if you don't want to end up with a child's size shirt.

One bit of experience to pass along - after washing be ready to scratch. Once your natural oils get washed out of the shirt it will be pretty itchy until you wear it for a day or so.
