  • For those interested in speaking historical French

The community of Old Mines, Missouri is unique to this country's history and heritage in the sense that they have retained their particular French language since the 1720s, with very little change. Due in part to their isolation and limited influence from outside comminites, the particular style of French that has been spoken in and around Old Mines is roughly the same as when the French first came to the United States.

The Old Mines Area Historical Society has a series of book that helps to teach this style of French language. To speak the French they do in Old Mines would be more historically acurate than to speak in modern day Parisian French.

OLD MINES FRENCH LESSONS #1 - #8 by Dr. Rosemary Hyde Thomas. Text and lessons in the dialect of the Old Mines Area. Includes songs and history used in her Old Mines French class, 1978, 107pp $16.00 http://www.rootsweb.com/~moomahs/publications.htm

I am in no way associated with the OMAHS, but just thought that I would pass this along, in case anyone would be interested in improving their first person, or would just like to learn a little bit about this country's history.
