  • Vicksburg Hit by Tornado

Vicksburg area was hit by a tornado today. There is some damage, but not to much info or pictures are out yet. One meteorologist is calling Vicksburg hard hit. Here are some links about the tornado:

Plus on top of this a lot of homes in the Vicksburg area are being flooded by the Mississippi River.

Right now the park is closed due to tree that have fallen across the tour road, which is pretty normal whenever we get even a moderate storm. I can't speak for anything that has occured in downtown Vick, though rumor has it that the Ameristar casino may have received some damage. As far as flooding is concerned, that would only be a problem north of town along the Yazoo as Vicksburg proper is several hundred feet above the Mississippi.

These are some pictures I took with my cellphone this a.m. of the Raymond Courthouse. This is from the some storm. It appears to only have some scrapes and bruises.

How has the flooding effected the park? The reason I am inquiring about the flooding, I was watching the Weather Channel today, and they were talking to an Emergency Management staff member. She had mentioned about the flood stage up to 46 this am. What about the downtown area?

The park is fine, except for the occasional tree or limb blown down by the storm. I went through it Saturday, and as far as I could tell no monuments, markers, or cannon were damaged, nor was the USS Cairo.

The only part of the park which could be remotely affected by the flooding (and this is a long shot) is a small section along North Washington Street near the Yazoo Canal, the former riverbed near the bend of the old river. The river is predicted to crest at 49 feet Sunday morning (it's at 48.2 today), so it still has a long way to go before it impacts even this area.
