  • July 5, 2008 Fairfax House preservation event

If you find yourself in the St. Louis area over the Fourth of July weekend, please consider coming to a patriotic picnic at the 1839 Fairfax House at 9401 Manchester Road. (Corner of Manchester and Rock Hill.)

This beautiful house urgently needs your help. As you can see in the NRHP assessment below, the house was granted NRH status about two years ago, but the county preservation people have had a hard time funding even the most basic stabilization efforts.

The Star of the West Society has undertaken to revive interest in this house. We will begin with a Civil War-era patriotic celebration on the afternoon of Saturday, July 5. The purpose of this event is to bring local residents and history enthusiasts to the house so that they can see for themselves the urgent need for preservation.

I'm pleased to report that the Rock Hill Town Council was delighted with the idea of the patriotic picnic, and will be turning out in full force to support the event. We'll have light refreshments, patriotic songs and toasts, lawn games, and fancy speeches.

The event is free, but we ask that participants consider making a small donation for the house tours and perhaps bring something for the pot luck picnic.

As some of you may know, this event is part of our weekend-long Fourth of July celebration, but those will be announced over in the civilians forum.

    Thanks!
