  • American Civil War Memorial?

We know where to find the Spanish-American War Memorial, the WWI Memorial, WWII Memorial, the Korean War Memorial and the Vietnam Memorial.

Ever wonder why there isn't an American Civil War Memorial? Click here: http://www.nationalcwmemorial.org/

    Re: American Civil War Memorial?

Hmmm... So who is the first to say it is biased?

What side of the war will the makers inherently tell?

Makes me wonder if there is ever a truly "fair and balanced" view of the war... (sorry FOXnews)

Still... it will definitely be an "E" for Effort when it is dedicated.

Personally, I think that all of the preserved Civil War battlefields and sites are fitting memorials to the men, women and the war. Who needs a large stone and bronze "national" memorial to honor and remember the sacrifices and gains when you can visit so many of the places where they occurred?

I think you're correct and the reason we have national memorials for foriegn wars is obvious. As there are hundreds of battlefields (big and small) and hundreds of thousands of marked graves from the CW, a national monument probably not needed.

I just thought it was interesting to see there was an effort for an official memorial.

At least they have a good artist on board for the project.

Agree 100%. Lets spend any donations to preserve what we have. The bozo that wrote the intro to why we need it somewhat underestimates the number of folks involved in the watershed event in our nation's history.

To commemorate the heroic effort of the thousands of Americans involved in the War Between the States and to the significance of the lasting peace, brotherhood, and national identity of the United States, nationally recognized historical sculptor, Gary Casteel, will create a memorial in stone and bronze, depicting the complete four year struggle in bas-relief and three dimensional form

On another note how was the choice of a sculptor/artist made? I think this is the same guy that sculpted that exceptional (tongue firmly in cheek) equestrian statue of Longstreet at Gettysburg? ~Gary

No, Gary didn't do the Longstreet thing, he has however done some of the most amazing statues on Civil War battlefields and other historic sites. Please check out his website and I think you'll agree he's a step above the Longstreet disaster.http://www.garycasteel.com/

Gary uses good models, original equipment and uniforms for reference, he does intense research and he's a talented artist to boot....oh and he's a really nice guy. :)

Chris, You'll find the following on his website.

Gary found that his keen sense of history, talent, and drive for producing pieces in his personal dynamic style would thrust him into the demanding light of success with the Gen. James Longstreet equestrian erected in the Gettysburg National Military Park.

PS, I guess I'm more partial to Ron Tunison.

                  Re: American Civil War Memorial?

Straight from the ACW Memorial website:

"Best known for his equestrian monument honoring General James Longstreet at Gettysburg National Military Park, he continues to produce fine art bronze figures and memorials"

                  Tunison is a better choice.

I still shudder to think my unit raised and donated money to help pay for that statue of Longstreet. I can't even look at it when driving by.

                      Re: American Civil War Memorial?

Last I heard this was supposed to be built in Wheeling, West Virginia and was a project that was dead in the water once Senator Byrd decided not to pursue funding from the Federal Government. It is essentially an effort by Gary Casteel to create work for himself and is rather ridiculous considering the REAL preservation work that needs attention. I especially like the part about the panel of historians, er. . . I mean, "The National Civil War Memorial Commission is currently assembling a distinguished group of historians to be on the selection panel." Seems odd since their "Timeline" shows Mr. Casteel already casting the monument in July of 2007! From what I hear in academia no one will touch this mess.

Also, I like to think that the veterans put up the monuments they wanted to and we have the opportunity to visit, and need be preserve those on many battlefields. They did not decide to put up a "national" monument and any attempt to do so would be a confused effort on our part.

                      Preserve battlefields, support real preservation.

Is there a national WWI memorial? if so where? I've never heard of such a thing.

Kansas City. Rather impressive monument, and just recently designated the "national" memorial by Congress I believe.

                              Re: American Civil War Memorial?

One thing to keep in mind is that there is no governing body that hands out the designation "national." Architects, sculptors, etc. can add "national" to the name of their projects without any approval from anyone. Thus the National Civil War Museum in Harrisburg, Penn., the National Museum of Civil War Medicine in Frederick, Md., and the National Museum of the Civil War Soldier in Petersburg, Va. It's all just a marketing gimmick.

By the way, there is a World War One memorial adjacent to the Mall in Washington, DC. The facility in Kansas City is the National World War I Museum at Liberty Memorial.
