Dear Sir ,
It seems to me that the appropriate memorial to Civil War veterans is our ability to have one American country and not a Balkan-like continent . All these monuments , statues , - are we Imperial Rome ? Battlefield preservation at least saves the land the war was fought on.

Sorry to be off topic again, but I'm curious too...

I thought the WWI memorial in D.C. was a memorial specifically to the city's participation that just now happens to be under the care of the NPS. I haven't visited it in a little while, so I could be wrong.

I was working off the top of my head before, but http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Liberty_Memorial says that Liberty Memorial was given its designation by Congress in 2004, hence the construction of the nice new museum they have there.

I have often thought the same, we are a nation that has survived a cataclysmic civil war and not decended into sectional anarchy,this is a tribute itself to the men who fought the war on both sides,most nations have splintered, these men and the war should not be forgotten, the battlefields are the memorials and all efforts should go to their preservation
