  • NYC church saved by $20 million!

St. Brigid's R.C. Church on Manhattan's Lower East Side, a 160-year-old structure, has been spared thanks to an anonymous $20 million donation.

The pastor of St. Brigid's was Fr. Thomas Mooney, who became a Chaplain of the 69th NYSM (he's the one in the classic "field service" photo). The unit had a Requiem for the Dead mass there after Bull Run.

New York's historic structures, whether notable or not, are quickly vanishing, particularly in that area. This is truly a victory.

Does the church face west on Tompkins Square Park?
