I wanted to take the opportunity to thank everyone who helped us with the Morris Island Preservation Cause and to report that it is done.
At 11:45 am on Friday, May 30 2008 the Ginn Company sold Cummings Point to the City of Charleston. A luncheon was held to honor this momentous event and Mayor Joe Riley noted that the island will be preserved for the people of Charleston, the state of South Carolina and the United States. Ginn bought the property for 6.5 million and offered it for 4.5 million but closed the deal at 3.5 million because it was the right thing to do.
There may still be a few details about access to the island to be worked out but the public has overwhelmingly opposed docks and sanitary facilities being built on the island.
I would like to thanks those individuals who wrote letters and called to help this happen and especially to those who took the time and effort to help us with the Re-occupation of Fort Sumter in February 2005. That experience for me is one that will NEVER be matched and it was definitely due in large part to the participants in that event. It remains a highlight for the NPS rangers at Ft. Sumter/Moultrie NP.
Never let anyone tell you that you cannot make a difference because each of you made a difference for Morris Island!
