  • Morris Island Saved

I wanted to take the opportunity to thank everyone who helped us with the Morris Island Preservation Cause and to report that it is done.
At 11:45 am on Friday, May 30 2008 the Ginn Company sold Cummings Point to the City of Charleston. A luncheon was held to honor this momentous event and Mayor Joe Riley noted that the island will be preserved for the people of Charleston, the state of South Carolina and the United States. Ginn bought the property for 6.5 million and offered it for 4.5 million but closed the deal at 3.5 million because it was the right thing to do.
There may still be a few details about access to the island to be worked out but the public has overwhelmingly opposed docks and sanitary facilities being built on the island.
I would like to thanks those individuals who wrote letters and called to help this happen and especially to those who took the time and effort to help us with the Re-occupation of Fort Sumter in February 2005. That experience for me is one that will NEVER be matched and it was definitely due in large part to the participants in that event. It remains a highlight for the NPS rangers at Ft. Sumter/Moultrie NP.
Never let anyone tell you that you cannot make a difference because each of you made a difference for Morris Island!

[i]"We have captured one fort--Gregg--and one charnel house--Wagner--and we have built one cemetery, Morris Island. The thousand little sand-hills that in the pale moonlight are a thousand headstones, and the restless ocean waves that roll and break on the whitened beach sing an eternal requiem to the toll-worn gallant dead who sleep beside."

    David......

Thank You and all the other organizers of the Ft. Sumpter Re-Occupation for the opportunity to help save Morris Island. Your right, the event will be the High Water Mark for all who participated. There would be one other for me, riding Mo across the sound at low tide from Morris to Ft. Sumpter.

    My best to all..........Lester

      David:

I couldn't agree more and it's the best reason to repeat that performance for the 2011, 150th. Thanks to you and the P.L.H.A . for all your help in saving Morris Island.

        Dave,

While the word "sweet" is often overused, in this instance it simply cannot be used enough.

...and thank you Mr. Bartsch for an excellent event that many said couldn't be done.
