  • Antietam hit by windstorms

Just drove by there there evening, lots of trees down but I didn't see any monuments destroyed. Some pretty large trees fell around the Dunker Church and one has fallen across the path to Burnsides Bridge.
A few trees are laying on fences and two large ones are blown over into the National cemetery.

I know they removed a witness tree near where Mansfield got it some years ago, but isn't there another still standing? Any idea if it was affected?

I believe the only surviving witness tree at Antietam is the large Sycamore next to Burnside's bridge. Any idea if it was affected? I know that the last time I was there it wasn't looking so healthy.

I was told by a Ranger last year several trees in the "west" woods area are witness trees, they are up in the woods from the Mary Locher (sp) farm.

          Robert and Brian
I didn't see any trees over down in the bottoms near the bridge, the biggest one down near there was along the walk leading down the hill.
The West wood got hit it looked like to me. It was getting dark and I couldn't get back in there very far but could see some trees down.
Most looked to have been hollow, the ones by the church, the walnut that fell closest looked to have been rooted atop a rock....
