All,
In addition to enjoying the American Civil War, another of my hobby/interests is trains and railroads. I happen to be fortunate to live where American Railroading began. Many of you may have heard that the 175th Anniversary of American Railroading was cancelled due to the President's Day 2003 Roundhouse Roof collapse due to a record snowfall here in Baltimore. The Roundhouse museum has been back in operation since November 2004, but the repairs to some of the locomotives and cars continues. This year, the 2008 Annual Appeal is all going to repairing the #117 Thatcher Perkins, a 10-wheeler in the 4-6-0 configuration, built right here in Baltimore's Mt. Clare shops in 1863. The #117 was used to carry ammunition and war material, Union soldiers and Confederate POWs throughout the B&O system.
Here is the Appeal:
Help Restore the B&O #117 Thatcher Perkins
Restoration is underway for the National Historic Landmark locomotive B&O #117 Thatcher Perkins that was severely damaged in the Roundhouse Roof Collapse.
To date the cab, hand railing, grab irons, and stack have been removed and the bell has been repaired. Work continues on damaged metal components and the cab is slowly being rebuilt. We are currently preparing for asbestos remediation of boiler jacketing.
Contributions to our Annual Appeal are going toward this restoration project. All contributions are 100% tax deductible. Those who donate $500 or more to the restoration of the Thatcher Perkins will receive an 8" X 2 ¾" commemorative desk plaque made from wood salvaged from the original engineer's cab.
