  • The Wilderness Alert !!!!

Just got my current copy of Civil War News and on the front page !!! Wal-mart submits plans to build on 55 acre plot in The Wilderness.

The request is to build a super Wal-mart plaza in a plot of land directly across from the Fredericksburg / Spotsylvania National Military Park (The Wilderness). The CWPT has already fired a salvo across Wal-mart's bow and I suggest we all do the same. I am writing them a letter stating I will no longer be a patron of their stores and will urge others to do the same.

Wally-world is already overstepping its bounds with the way it allegedly treats its employees... now they want to do the same with ground many heroic Americans fought and died over.

      This is sad, sick...

Has CWPT made any further efforts on this matter?

Make sure you check Erics other thread.

Maybe we need to look outside of Walmart. (i know...)
Its a development company from Herndon, maybe they need a letter.
Maybe Orange County, who is for this needs a wake up call.

This all flys in the face of Orange shooting down the widening of 20.

Walmart is going to build, its up to the BOS and Planning Comms to push against this things. Thats where we come in.

The article basically states that they have just started the fight. Letters went to county officials and the CEO of Wal-Mart stating that they are going to have a fight on their hands. They are asking for everyone's help to defeat this Goliath. I hate Wal-Mart an will never buy from them.

Eric - I thought I remembered seeing a Walmart near Salem Church in that awful glut on Hwy 3? Sounds like a classic case of "build it and they will come." Somehow most of the folks who live out that way don't seem like Wal Martians to me...but even they must hate having to fight their way east on Hwy 3 toward Fredericksburg.

Gang this is another good chance to join the fight by joining CWPT and Friends of the Wilderness Battlefield. FOWB is an outstanding example of concerned citizens at the grass roots level going above and beyond the call, whether it be battlefield preservation, historical property renovation at Ellwood, living history appreciation (they get it!) or cleanup. Before last years NPS event I was driving along Hwy 20 and met one of the FOWB folks picking up trash along the side of the roadway. He told me he had the "duty" that day. My kind of folks. Let's help them out.

As for Walmart, this is kind of like home security - if you make it just a little too painful from a PR standpoint, they will pick somewhere else down the block. I know the head of PR for WMT (served together in the Navy) and went to high school with his bride - will send a letter to them direct.

The problem is not Wal-Mart, if you stop them another big retailer will just fill the void.. The problem is the zoning board and the owners of the land, those are the people that must be dealt with..
                thanks

Wal-Mart ain't helping the problem in this case, either. There must be a fine balance between private enterprise and preserving our American heritage.

Sam Walton is rolling in his grave somewhere right now...

Is there a online petition? If you get me an address I'll put it on the boards here in KY and I'm sure the reenacting family would be on board.
